Resilient Network Design – enhancing availability for critical services (ResNeD)

Wednesday, October 6, 2021 – 8:30-12:00
Telecommunication networks support many essential services (e.g. smart grid communications, emergency services, financial/banking), hence being one of the most critical infrastructures that our society depends on. Thus, communication networks must have high reliability and resilience.

The objectives of project ResNeD of INESC Coimbra, in collaboration with IT-Aveiro, are focused on the development and performance evaluation of advanced models and methods for improving the network availability/resilience, namely addressing relevant topics such as: the optimisation of the design of high availability network segments (or spines) and SRLGs (Shared Risk Link Groups), taking into account the multilayered network structures and making the most of SDN/T-SDN technologies, and geodiverse routing (in regions vulnerable to natural disasters). These issues have been addressed in various network architectural and application contexts. Furthermore, various methodological approaches for tackling various of the formulated network design/decision problems have been investigated, namely single criterion constrained optimisation and multicriteria decision analysis methods.

In this workshop, three distinguished speakers will give us their vision on resilient network design and some of the solutions proposed by researchers involved in the ResNeD project will be presented.
